Bipolar I Mania
Principal Investigator: Kathleen McKenna, MD
Children’s Memorial Hospital
- Males or females, ages 10-17 years old
- Diagnosed with Bipolar I mania or displaying symptoms such as
-
- Changes in mood – feeling happy, overly optimistic, irritable
- Changes in thinking – racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, delusions, hallucinations
- Changes in behavior – increased activity or socializing, talking rapidly
- Changes in physical condition –less need for sleep, increased energy
- No significant medical illness, including seizure disorders
- A responsible person must be available to accompany the adolescent to all visits, provide information and dispense study medication
- Close monitoring of study medication safety and efficacy
- Hospitalization, comprehensive physical and psychiatric examinations, laboratory procedures, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and study medication at no charge
