I use the zebrafish to model two human birth defects: Holoprosencephaly and Niemann Pick Type C Disorder, disorders that can be attributed to genetic disruption of Sonic Hedgehog (shh) and Neimann Pick 1 (npc1) genes, respectively. My research seeks to understand the early progression of these disease states, especially with respect to craniofacial and brain development.
